I’ve found myself recommending “The Kind Diet” to transitioning vegans at least once a day, so I figured I let you in on this secret Holy Grail.
When one thinks of Alicia Silverstone, they do not usually think of a nutritional guru. However, she is an incredibly passionate Vegan who has worked with brilliant nutritionists and doctors to write this book. She has a foundation in Macrobiotics, but she understands that not everyone can live that life. This book breaks down Veganism wonderfully.
Part 1 of the book lays out the facts. Unarguable facts and their sources. Reading this part of the book made me so angry I wanted to make photo copies and post them on people’s door. If you’re unsure about going vegan, this book will be a great motivator and a continuous reminder of why we pursue a cruelty-free way of life.
The next part breaks down an approach to Veganism in 3 different ways. There’s Flirting which is exactly what it sounds like…dipping your toes into the Vegan way of life without making a full commitment. Then Vegan (no animal products). Then Super Hero, which is basically Macrobiotics (but Super Hero sounds so much more fun). It also ranges from using vegan substitutes like Daiya Cheese and Veganese Mayo – to full on organic unprocessed and unrefined foods. She captures a great assortment of possible ingredients depending on where you are in your transitioning comfort zone.
She has a whole section on how to make whatever version of the diet you choose work for your life. How to incorporate this lifestyle among non-vegan friends, restaurant recommendations, grocery store lists, easy cooking guides, an ideal kitchen set up. And then how to make your whole life cruelty free with your choices of clothing, personal care products, ect. Best of all, as opposed to focusing on weight loss (which will naturally happen eating this diet) she focuses on eating to promote a cruelty free way of life. A Kind Life, if you will. She even has a website for additional learning materials!
This Book is Great For: Anyone who wants to learn about veganism, whether you want to pursue a cruelty free life style for yourself, or if you just want to educate yourself on why someone would choose to go vegan.
Favorite Quote: “One of the things I love best about the Kind Diet is that you will actually become part of the solution to our global problems. Following a plant- based diet dials down our insane consumption of resources like fresh water, oil, coal, and the precious rain forest. It helps to heal the environment by denying sup- port to toxic food industries. It is a signifi cant move toward ending world hunger and distributing food more equitably. I believe that at the core of every human is love, and it seeks to spread itself— that’s what love’s all about. Your heart will open more than ever and that love will start to spread, affecting all the people in your life. And because the Kind Diet is sustainable, you are—by making simple, delicious choices loving the whole planet with every single bite. I mean, come on … How cool is that?” (pg 14)
