I hope you’re all off to an exciting new year filled with love, fearlessness, and change.
2018 has already been full of change for me. As I’m writing this I’m sitting on a coffee table in my brand new apartment because the futon is full of moving boxes.
And change is hard! Believe me… if I could, I’d never change. It’s much simpler to settle into the routine. But that wouldn’t be a fulfilling life. When my friend lost her steady job last year I said to her “life should be a quilt of many colors! Not a single sheet!!” And it’s true.
Besides, no matter how hard you try, the universe will make sure you’re living a full and exciting life. Whether it’s a new job, new friend, or just that your go-to ingredients for your breakfast smoothie aren’t available at the grocery store this week so you have to mix up your morning routine. Any change is capable of eliciting some excitement and fear.
So how do we deal with this? How do we enjoy all the juicy goodness that comes with change without being overwhelmed by the anxiety that everything is about to be different.
Part of my coaching practice is about encouraging clients to embrace the Ebb and Flow of life.
Eventually life is going to Ebb. Things will change. It will feel messy, chaotic, uncomfortable. And every part of you is going to want to resist that change, because it’s human instinct to do the safe thing. But is that beneficial to anyone? including yourself?
NO!! THE HOUSE WILL BURN DOWN YOU FOOLISH PUP.
When life starts to Ebb we need to acknowledge and respect it. We say “Okay, the house is on fire. How do I deal with this? How big is the fire really? is there a fire extinguisher nearby? should I call the fire department to help me out?”
And soon our new scary circumstances become everyday life. We start to Flow. And we are thankful for the change. And all the practices that helped us along the way, until the next Ebb comes into our life and the cycle begins again.
