This Sunday I spent my morning getting to know the animals of the Catskill Animal Sanctuary, and oh my GOODNESS it was such a wonderful experience.
“What exactly IS an animal sanctuary!?” Glad you asked.
As we all know, there are people out there who treat animals horrendously. And I’m not just talking about slaughter houses… There are hoarders who keep farm animals as pets without taking proper care of them. There are people who abandon their animals on the side of the road. They sell them at kill auctions. Pump them with dangerous amounts of hormones….the list goes on.
Animal sanctuaries (like the Catskill Animal Sanctuary) rescue these animals and help them make full recoveries from their abuse, allowing them to live the rest of their lives out happily under the care of the sanctuary. The Catskill Animal Sanctuary also runs events, and advocates for outreach to ignite social change through a vegan and cruelty free way of life. When I read about them I felt an immediate connection, and knew I had to become involved.
So today was my volunteer worker orientation, and I’m already learning so much!! Everything ranging from the horrors of animal agriculture to the beauty and intelligence of these animals. I conquered a big fear of mine and pet a turkey! I met animals that were saved from horrible situations, and recognized that all farm animals are capable of fear, happiness, sadness and love. Farm animals form emotional bonds the same way that our domestic pets do.
Today was a beautiful reminder of why I choose to be a Vegan. It’s not just because it makes me feel good, it’s not just because it’s good for the planet…it’s because at the end of the day animals with emotional lives are the casualties of consuming animal products.
Who could ever imagine hurting these guys!?
They also have a Homestead at CAS! It’s an old farm house turned into a completely vegan bed and breakfast. I mean COME ON HOW BEAUTIFUL IS THAT!? A DREAM COME TRUE. A WONDERFUL IDEA FOR A WEEKEND GET AWAY. A ROMANTIC WEEKEND GETAWAY. MAYBE A SURPRISE FOR YOUR VEGAN GIRLFRIEND? HM? POSSIBLY? JUST THROWING THAT OUT THERE???????????????????
But really, I’m so excited for the work I’m about to embark on with CAS. I can’t wait to get to know my new friends better, and continue my mission to make the world a better place. If you’re in NYC and looking to get out of the city madness…a day at CAS definitely does the trick.
(Plus right down the street is a Bread Alone bakery that makes a delicious vegan chocolate spelt cake as a reward for all the hard work you put into trying to save the world)
